what is the difference between Botox, Dysport, Nucieva and Xeomin?

Botox, Dysport, Nuceiva, and Xeomin are brands of neuromodulators. Neuromodulators are used to smooth wrinkles by reducing muscle movement. This is accomplished by damaging/blocking the nerves communicating with your brain to contract your facial muscles. All brands of neuromodulators work towards the same goal, but differ slightly in how they are manufactured.

Botox

Botox is the most commonly known neuromodulator because it has been around the longest - it came to Canada in 2001, but has been on the market since the 1970’s. Botox has also been approved for medical use including treatment of Bell’s Palsy, urinary incontinence and excessive sweating. There has been more research done on Botox than any other neuromodulator, as it has been around the longest. Clients who have received all brands of neuromodulators report that Botox feels the “heaviest” after taking effect.

Dysport

Dysport came to Canada in 2014, but was approved by the FDA in 2009. Originally it was targeted at the glabella region (the area between your eyebrows causing 11’s), but works effectively on all muscles of the face. Clients report that Dysport typically kicks in quicker (around the 48hr mark) and tends to last longer for most clients compared to other neuromodulators.

Nucieva

Nucieva is the newest neuromodulator on the market, and used solely for cosmetic purposes. It was approved by Health Canada and the FDA in 2019. It acts very similarly to Botox, but due to its new arrival, there is less research on its efficacy. In Canada it is marketed under the name Nucieva, in the States it is called Jeuveau - same product, same company, different name.

Xeomin

Xeomin is another newer neuromodulator approved by the FDA in 2011, coming to Canada in 2012. Xeomin doesn’t “spread” when injected, therefore requiring very precise placement in the muscle. Due to its lack of spread, it usually doesn’t create as much of a “frozen” look, but will be ineffective if not injected exactly in the correct area of the muscle.

At Frida we most commonly use Dysport as we have received the most positive feedback and best results with this neuromodulator. We also carry Botox and Nucieva, so please feel free to ask your injector about different neuromodulator options to decide what is right for you!
