skincare myths and what products actually help

While access to information doesn’t seem to be a problem these days, when it comes to the world of skincare, it feels like you have to put on your detective hat and try to filter through the stream of opinions that exist out there from people who don’t have a professional background in skincare *cough* TikTok and IG influencers *cough*. I’m sure you’ve heard your share of skincare advice that made your face scrunch up with skepticism, so today’s goal is to debunk some long-standing skincare myths.

“I Don’t Burn so I Don’t Need SPF”

There is no such thing as a safe tan. An increase in skin pigment (melanin) or a tan, is our skin’s response to damage that has already occurred. When our skin is exposed to UV radiation our body increases production of melanin in an attempt to protect skin from further damage. Don’t be fooled into thinking this protection is enough, remember, it’s a stress response to damage and the extra melanin in tanned skin provides a sun protection factor (SPF) of about 2 to 4. Wear your sunscreen.

“Washing with Hot Water will Help Open your Pores”

First off, your pores are not windows that open and close. And second, although a steamy hot shower and hot water on your face may feel relaxing, it’s not the best option for your skin. Hot water can leave your skin feeling sensitive and excess heat can cause inflammation in the skin. Opt for lukewarm or slightly cool and your skin will thank you.

  • The ZO Gentle Cleanser is safe for all skin types, perfect post-treatment, and will leave your skin feeling refreshed, clean and hydrated.

“You Don’t Need Moisturizer if you have Oily Skin”

Water and oil levels in the skin are two different things - you can absolutely be dealing with breakouts and have dehydrated skin. Every single skin type needs sufficient free water levels to ensure the skin is operating at a healthy, functional state.

  • The SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel is an oil-free moisturizer that is in the form of a serum so you don’t have to worry about the feeling of a heavy cream being applied on the skin. Vitamin B5 (panthenol) and hyaluronic acid are humectant powerhouses that will help replenish hydration levels within the skin and restore radiance.

“If It’s Tingling It’s Working”

A brief tingling for a few seconds when you apply something like a leave-on exfoliant is okay, but anything that lingers longer is your skin trying to tell you it’s being irritated, not helped. If the skin never seems to acclimate after several uses, the product may be too much for your skin, or it may be time to consider lowering how frequently you are using it in your routine.

  • The ZO Exfoliation Accelerator provides gentle yet effective exfoliation for a smoother, brighter complexion. A 10% glycolic and lactic acid complex encourages skin cell regeneration while aloe, green tea and allantoin soothe and calm the skin.
